Disaster generates variety of new scams and swindles

TOKYO —

Monetary donations for disaster victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami have been pouring into relief organizations at the rate of 4 billion yen per day. Aera (April 18) reports that as of April 7, the estimated total of pledges and contributions to the relief effort stood at 113,430,000,000 yen.

At the top of the list of celebrity philanthropists is Softbank CEO’s Masayoshi Son, who has pledged 10 billion yen, plus his annual salary until he retires. Son’s rags-to-riches story, from his roots as a impoverished 3rd-generation Korean from Saga Prefecture who took Japanese citizenship in 1991, are profiled in a five-page story in Flash (April 26).
